This is a guide to resources, training and support available to medical and healthcare researchers seeking to publish their research.
- Have you recently written a paper, but you're not sure to which journal you should submit it?
- Must enter the title and/or abstract of the paper in the box, and click on 'Find journals', 'Find authors' or 'Find Articles'.
- Jane will then compare your document to millions of documents in PubMed to find the best matching journals, authors or articles.
Citation Manager: Zotero
Citation manager saves and organizes your references more efficiently, especially for longer projects. Use a citation manager to automatically create citations or lists of references (bibliographies), insert citations into your paper, share your research, and collaborate in groups.
Zotero is a free and open-source citation manager software to manage bibliographic data and related research materials.
Zotero Set Up
- If you are using Zotero for the first time, register for a free account
- Click Zotero and open it on your computer
- If you are using your own laptop, click Zotero and click Download.
- Download Zotero for Windows or macOS then install Zotero
- Download Zotero Connector for Chrome or Firefox
- Once Zotero is open on your computer click on Edit>Preferences>Sync>and sign into your new account on PC
- For Mac users click Zotero>Preferences>Sync
Create In-text citations and bibliographies
- Open Microsoft Word or Google Doc
- Click on the “Zotero” tab
- If you do not see the Zotero tab, close all programs (Word, Excel, Google,etc.) Then open Zotero and go to Edit>Preferences>Cite>Word Processors and click “Install Microsoft Word Add-in
- Select “Add/Edit” Citation and enter several in-text citations
- Then, click Add/Edit Bibliography and a bibliography should populate on your document based on your in-text citations

- Search in PubMed to get results
- If you want to export only some of the displayed citations, select them by checking the box to the left of those citations. If you want to export all the citations on the page, in your clipboard, or from the whole search, you can leave the boxes unchecked.
- On the results screen, click on the “Send to” button then select Citation manager.
- Choose from the dropdown. If you checked individual citations, use the Selection option. To export all results from a search, use All results.
- Click Create a file
- The citations will save to your downloads folder. You can then move the file to the folder for your project.
- To import them in Zotero, Open Zotero from your computer
- Go to File–Import
- Select your file which you want to import
- You will find your imported folder in Zotero

- Start a search in CINAHL database
- Select articles you want to save in a folder by clicking on + sign
- It will turn into yellow folder icon
- Click on Share drop down options and select “Add search to folder”
- Click “Folder” tab on the top
- It will open “ My Folder” and click “Export”
- It will open Export Manager
- Go to Save citations to a file formatted for: and select “Direct Export in RIS Format…and click “Save”
- It will save file on your computer
- Open Zotero–File–Import and click “Next”
- Select file from your computer to Import
- Click Finish and results will be imported in Zotero
